Culturally Responsive Making: Developing High-Low Tech Maker Activities in Local and Mobile Spaces for Supporting American Indian Youth is a two-year, National Science Foundation (#1623404) funded project in collaboration with Arizona State University and the University of Pennsylvania. The goal of this project is to develop culturally responsive making activities and makerspaces with two Indigenous communities, one in Utah and one in Arizona. We are interested in how these spaces and activities impact youth, teacher, and community conceptions of and interest in STEM learning. Dr. Kristin Searle
Dr. Kristin A. Searle is an assistant professor of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences at Utah State University. She received her Ph.D. in education and anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on how participating in making activities can broaden students’ sense of what computing is and who can do it, with a focus on the development of culturally responsive computing pedagogies. Her work has appeared in journals such as Harvard Educational Review and the Journal of Science Education and Technology.
Dr. Breanne Litts
Breanne Litts investigates how people learn by and collaborate through making, designing, and producing and develops technologies and learning environments to support these activities. Her scholarly interests combine identity, learning, design, and technology, particularly from a learning sciences perspective. She has conducted extensive research and evaluation in both formal and out-of-school contexts examining how to leverage new technologies, like mobile apps and games, to support learning. As part of this work, Dr. Litts has co-design numerous tools and curricula for K-12 ranging from forgiveness education to computer science.
Teresa Casort is a PhD student in the Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Department at Utah State University. She graduated with a Anthropology BS from Missouri State University in 2012, and moved to Utah to pursue a Cultural Resource Management MS in 2014. During her masters work, Teresa became aware of the limited number of Native American academics and she is currently developing Maker activities to expose Indigenous youth to STEM concepts in K-12 settings. Her research interests focus on integrating GIS map-making with Indigenous narratives associated with ‘sense of place’.
Whitney Lewis is a master of science student in the Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Program at Utah State. She traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to work on her research thesis earlier this year. Whitney Lewis' thesis research examines how storyboarding as a design scaffold affects learners computational making process in ARIS. Lewis recently completed an internship with Intuit. Intuit is a public company that creates QuickBooks, TurboTax, and the Mint mobile app.
Cedric Mannie, an Undergraduate Research Assistant, is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at Utah State University. He is interested in developing computer hardware such as Thin Film Transistors. Cedric assists with research involving computational thinking and the Augmented Reality and Interactive Storytelling (ARIS) mobile application development platform.
Chase Mortensen, an Undergraduate Research Assistant, is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Utah State University. He is interested in mobile computing and virtual reality, and assists with research involving computational thinking and the Augmented Reality and Interactive Storytelling (ARIS) and PocketCHIP mobile application development platforms.
Ayla Stults - Lopez
Ayla Stults – Lopez, an undergraduate research assistant, is studying plant science. What sparked her interest in this work was being able to dive in and learn how children are learning, and the best approaches. Discovering the best methods with interactive approach is an exciting subject to look into. She hopes to use this information one day in the future to teach children how to garden and the importance of it. The information discovered through this research is relative to all fields of work.
