SRI Center for Technology in Learning
“SRI International is an independent, nonprofit research institute conducting client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses, foundations, and other organizations” (http://sri.com/about/).
The CTL (Center for Technology in Learning) at SRI International focuses its research, development, and assessment activities on improving learning and teaching. CTL prototypes new tools and learning environments, and evaluates technology-supported educational innovations, to understand the practices and technologies that lead to better teaching and learning. Much of CTL’s work focuses on the classroom setting, afterschool programs, and teacher education programs, with an emphasis on important and difficult topics in math, science, and other subjects, K-12.
CTL covers a number of specific issues and topics through their research. However, CTL’s website, http://ctl.sri.com/about.jsp, lists the following as their mature areas of expertise:
- Evaluation of the interaction between technology and education reform efforts
- Design and support for distributed learning communities
- Strategic uses of handheld computing devices in education
- Technology supports for teaching and learning in mathematics and science
