Organization Summary:
NCTM offers a wide range of membership options, ranging in price. For only $28 per year, members that are 62 and older can join. Enrolled university sutdents can join for $39 per year. Full individual enrollment costs between $53 and $105, depending on what services you want to receive (NCTM, 2008, Membership).
NCTM offers annual regional and national meetings. For this coming year the regional conferences will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (October 2-3, 2008); Cleveland, Ohio (October 16-17, 2008); and Reno, Nevada (November 6-7, 2008). There will be more than 200 professional development classes offered. The national annual meeting and exposition will be help in Washington D.C. April 22-25, 2009. At this meeting there will be over 1,000 sessions and workshops to pick from.
NCTM states their mission and goals on their websige, which are as follows:
Mission
"The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public voice of mathematics education, providing vision, leadership and professional development to support teachers in ensuring equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students."
Goals
"In accordance with the mission, the NCTM Board has adopted the following multi-year strategic priorities.
Provide guidance and resources for establishing and enacting mathematics curriculum that is coherent, focused, well articulated and consistent with Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
Develop and actively promota culture of equity in every aspect of mathematics education.
Engage in political and public advocacy to focus decision makers on improving learing and teaching mathematics.
Advance professional development by creating a coherent framework fo audience-specific products and services.
Bring existing research into tteh classroom, and identify and encourage research that addresses the needs of classroom practice.
