Lesson Plan-UEN
Lesson Plan 1: UEN
This lesson plan teaches students information literacy skills in the area of World Languages, specifically Spanish. It is in conjunction with reading done in Spanish class; Crossing the Wire, by Will Hobbs, about a fictional character who attempts illegal immigration to the U.S. from Mexico.
Through this assignment students will learn about countries whose primary language is Spanish and whose citizens attempt illegal immigration to the U.S. They will choose 3 countries for the purpose of comparing them to the United States. They will focus more on the areas of government, economy, geography, and social structure to better understand why the citizens of those countries view the U.S. as a better place to live, recording their findings on a worksheet.
The Spanish teacher will dialogue with the students to help them identify which countries fulfill the purpose of the study. The librarian will then assist the students in completing the worksheet by reviewing the parts of the task, assisting students in identifying information sources, directing the students in locating those sources and suggest a few, some of which are accessible through http://www.uen.org/k12student/. such as CIA World Factbook and National Geographic, under World Resources. The librarian will follow up with students as they finish their worksheet and at the end of the class period during which the assignment is due.
