As already introduced, NetLogo is a programmable modeling environment. However, using one of NetLogo’s Features, HubNet, the user is allowed to run participatory simulations. “HubNet has been designed to enable participatory simulations in which all class members are actively engaged in learning activities mediated through technology.” (Stroup & Wilensky) This allows the entire class to participate by controlling a part of a system. All students are networked together either by computers or the TI-Navigator system. Since all students are controlling a particular part, they can see the effects of their decisions on the entire system. They also see how all parts of a system work together.
Walter Stroup and Uri Wilensky have led the way in the network-based design for systems learning in classrooms. More information can be found at http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/hubnet.html. NetLogo is free of charge and can be run on a mac or windows. They are working on making it compatible with cellphones and PDA’s.
