Agriculture Technologies and Edutainment
The Utah State University Extension Service has created many resources to be used in the classroom from Kindergarten through 12th grade, and even beyond. The resources are intended to “improve agricultural literacy by developing programs that increase student awareness about agriculture and instill in students an appreciation for our food and f
iber system.”
One of the resources that they have developed specifically for Career and Technology Education (CTE) Intro teachers is Agriculture Technologies and Edutainment. This consists of three games that teach and reinforce the concepts related to agriculture that are required to be taught by the Utah State Office of Education in the CTE Intro course. Students find the games highly engaging and entertaining. It may not be a game they would purchase at a gaming store, but it is one they enjoy playing in the classroom atmosphere. This software is provided free to teachers in Utah either online or as a CD that can be installed on multiple computers in the classroom setting.
The three games are geared toward the concepts intended to be taught in each of the three sections of CTE Intro. Range Rambler – Global Positioning Systems teaches how Range Scientists use GPS in the field
From Seed to Shelf – The Food Processing Game allows students to try their hand at processing and marketing crackers
Ag Overload – Food for Thought helps students understand the business end of the agriculture industry.
