MERLOT

M.E.R.L.O.T. = Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching

I must confess.  I originally chose this organization from the list primarily because of its name. JBut, as I began to dig further, I realize it must have been a sign, and no, not for a bar, but for what all teachers strive for. This organization is all about collaboration. However, instead of doing it in think sessions where everybody has to set aside a time to meet, this organization offers an online resource for whatever materials will help you become a better student, teacher, or anybody interested in furthering their own understanding in their job fields using technology to instruct them. I am much impressed with this organization and am very interested in becoming a member. Here’s their information.

           Website:                              http://www.merlot.org/merlot/index.htm
           Cost:                                      Free!!!
Target Audience:             Teachers, Administrators, Students (secondary and higher education)
Resources:                          Anything in any subject area imaginable

This organization is very similar to AskEric or the resources available through UEN. However, this organization does seem to be a bit more current due to the fact that anyone who is a member can submit lesson plans, or materials for users to access. The reason it is more current is because MERLOT does not have to go through a large legislative process or school board to add it to their database. This is good because it keeps your toolbox for your instruction exciting and up-to-date. All materials submitted to the organization go through an extensive Peer Review Board prior to being published online. But it seems like the review process is fairly quick having seen materials posted as soon as the beginning of September 2008.
This organization promotes itself through word of mouth, and its annual conference. If you are interested in helping further educational standards, bringing Educational Technology to the forefront of instruction, and helping other people along the way, then this organization is the perfect fit. They have a number of programs that can be incorporated into your school, higher learning institution, even into your work place. It has something to offer anyone interested in learning using technology. Enjoy!
