Building Blocks by Vygotsky
Votgotsky is most famous for his theory of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The simple description of ZPD is the difference between what a learner can do without help and what they can do with help. The idea of ZPD is that children learn from the example of an adult and through the examples children grow and learn they are able to transfer that knowledge to other areas.  Part of ZPD also includes the functions and activities that the child can perform with the assistance of others.

Along with ZPD is scaffolding. Vygotsky never really expressed the idea of scaffolding but it is a very important part of ZPD. When a child learns with the assistance of others, scaffolding often occurs, the person in the scaffolding process helps the child learns in steps, if too little information is presented learning  often doesn’t take place, however, if too much information is presented the child can become frustrated and ceases to learn.
