BLOSSOMS Initiative

In one of the last sessions of the conference Elizabeth Murray presented on the MIT LINC BLOSSOMS initiative.  BLOSSOMS stands for Blended Learning Open Source Science Or Math Studies.  The objective of BLOSSOMS is to develop an open source repository of blended learning video modules for high school math and science teachers.    Murray talked about design features open educational resources (OERs) must incorporate, BLOSSOMS pedagogy, and reviewed BLOSSOMS' development plan.

Open textbooks

    Being a student there would be nothing better than having my textbooks cost less. I mean, let's face it, textbooks are really expensive, and I'm paying tuition on top if it. Most students I know would like to see this happen, and the way that was proposed in session 3 was to make it available online. Connextions specifically is the organization that would make it happen. By breaking courseware down to maintainable modules, their system would stay up to date and flexible.Click here to read more »

Educational standard information attachment to OERs

 
The nation and each state has set standards for educators to achieve in their learners. It seems that to be able to search OERs by standard, or check the standards the OERs covers would be beneficial to educators, however there are some issues in creating such a database. One issue is that state standards are based on the nation's standards, but often the wording of the individual states' standards are widely different.Click here to read more »
