Technology, Learning, and Instruction
Technology - Technology is the manipulation of nature to meet humanity's needs and wants. When man learned how to create and control fire, fire became a piece of technology. However, this means that something can stop being technology if it no longer meets someone's needs or wants. A forest fire raging out of control is no longer technology. A computer that an indiviudal is too afraid to use is nothing more than an expensive bookend to that person. The stated goal of CTE programs in Utah is to improve technological literacy in students. Becky's definitions
Before starting out on the adventure of looking up the definitions for this assignment, I thought about my preconceived notions of what each term meant. My prior knowledge and experiences with learning and instruction basically corresponded with the definitions I found in Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary and others found on the internet. However, my preconceived concept of technology was barely in the ball park.

A Mind of Our Own and A Private Universe
If you in my cohort haven’t watched these yet, I’d HIGHLY recommend them. They really make you question the assumptions we make about what our students already know when we are instructing them. In A Private Universe, MIT graduates are asked to light a bulb using a wire and a battery. Most cannot. In A Mind of Our Own, high school students are asked why the seasons change and why the moon is sometimes full, crescent, or not appearing at all.Click here to read more »
