Week 9 “What is Learning” and “How Can I as a Teacher Effectuate Learning?”

Week 9 “What is Learning”
Learning I have found is about perceptions. How do I as a teacher perceive someone’s involvement or lack of involvement, and how do they as a student perceive what is to be learned and how to do it. How does the student perceive my concern for them, perceive the importance of the topic, and perceive its importance to them and life. Perception is based on our goals, whether concrete or implied, and our motivation is based on these goals. So motivation is also derived from perception. As a line from the movies “Sneakers” (yes, Robert Redford) says, “Things operate, not on reality, but the perception of reality”.

What is learning Oct. 19

Learning is acquiring a new skill or knowledge.  As we read this week, the learning is easier when the motivation is right.  I am currently working on losing weight,  If this does not sound like learning to you, give it a shot:  there is a lot of learning!  Anyway, from June through September I was in a weight loss contest as well as being a member of Weight Watchers.  Each competitor put up $10, with a total of 11 members, so $110 bucks.  I am not sure why but I fixated on that prize and I did not let go!  Well, okay, a couple of times I was less than disciplined but for the most part I was determined and I followed my Weight Watchers plan. I was so motivated by that prize! Plus, the weekly accomplishments kept me going in the right direction; they served as reinforcement along the way, keeping me going.  You can guess who won the money,  Oh yeah, it was me!       And I was so happy!Click here to read more »

Week 8: Case Based Learning

Learning is not memorizing some theories or formulas but operating knowledge you didn’t know before. Learning could be easy when you find right method and you are under correct instructions, learning could become more difficult when you are lack of motivation or you meet a bad teacher.

Wk #7 Learning

Being motivated to learn helps to stay focused on the content.  At least it helps for me.  Now that I'm older I have to have some type of motivation for learning because I have less time to worry about things that are not going to directly affect me.  I know that sounds bad, but I just stay more focused on the topic i'm trying to learn if It will help me out in some way or I have a reason to learn it.  Having a vested interested in something can provide all the motivation some people need.  Others need to have some fancy motivational tactics involved.  The level and type of motivation for learnig will also depend on the age of the learner I think.  What works for an adult will not necessarly work for a child.  For an adult, it helps to tie the insClick here to read more »

Week 7: Motivation

The articles this week were interesting for several reasons.  The first article, written clear back in 1981 is quite dated, but I was amazed at how people were already talking about how games can affect learning.  When I realized the author was talking about games such as "bricks", "pong", and "space invaders" I laughed out loud.  Games have come so far since then but I'm not sure the educational component has gone anywhere.  We now have games where the players can just about live their entire life in a virtual world (Second Life for example), working, going to parties, meeting people, and many other things.  There are games now that are so photo-realistic that you have to put them up to a real video to compare them (NBA Basketball)Click here to read more »
