Games for Learning

 
I have not had much experience with games in any form so it would be easy to say that they are a negative influence on students and learning. Researchers are making a case for a different perspective on the value of gaming. I have overheard a number of conversations with adults about how gaming is ruining the minds of young people and wasting time. And I have certainly heard my brother discuss the challenges with his teenage son and the battle between homework and gaming time.Click here to read more »

Definitions and Reactions to "Minds of Our Own"

I started watching the "Minds of Our Own" video and I couldn't stop after five minutes. I knew from personal experience that teaching (my own approach and other’s) is not often effective. This documentary saddened me, fascinated me, and confronted me with what I think is the importance about understanding what "learning" is and that it is core to making a difference as a teacher. Now I think I know why we are going to continually develop our definition of learning in this course and in INST 6325. What I took away from this presentation is that we truly need to establish where the student is, what knowledge they have before we embark on teaching them. Otherwise, what we bring to the class as students will ultimately limit our ability to learn or in some cases un-learn concepts that are inaccurate. At the least, as students we will not be able to take-in more information--adding something useful to our existing knowledge.Click here to read more »
