Week 8: Case Based Learning

Learning is not memorizing some theories or formulas but operating knowledge you didn’t know before. Learning could be easy when you find right method and you are under correct instructions, learning could become more difficult when you are lack of motivation or you meet a bad teacher.

In this week, when I read the case-based learning, the first story appeared in my mind is a story about a giraffe. When there is a singing completion held in the forest, all the animals join in the game except the giraffe. Everybody wonders why she did not want to participate. In the end, the author told readers that because giraffe does not have vocal cords, it could not make any voice. I learned that giraffe does not have vocal cords by this story and many years passed, I still remember it clearly. I think this is the effect of the case-based learning.

We like watching movies and soaps, because we like interesting stories and by watching them we can get fun and entertainment. Learning should also be full of fun, but our education make kids and other learners consider learning as boring and difficult. If learning could be as easy as watching movies, more and more people would enjoy learning process. But it is not easy to realize. There are some programs which could teach student by watching videos or telling stories, however, they must not be as interesting as movies or series. What we should do is to design more attractive programs, by which students could enjoy the learning process.

That is neat that you remember a story from a long time ago, good example.  Learning is a challenge, however I think most people like a challenge.  I know my favorite classes have not necessarily been the easy ones.  In fact my favorite classes have been challenging, and caused me to grow and think in new ways.  My daughter loves PBS programming.  I am amazed at all she learns from watching these shows and she enjoys them.  I think more and more people want or expect to be entertained.

I agree!  I believe that

I agree!  I believe that we try to understand everything that happens to us through narrative.  We attempt to discover a chronological, cause and effect system for the events around us.  It's only natural that a story would also be an effective way to learn.  I still remember things about television shows I watch as a kid, although I sometimes can't remember stuff I read for class from last week!  Using narrative, such as in these case-based studies, will help our students see cause and effect, as well as put the things we are teaching them into a real-world context.

case based learning

I agree that learning is not memorization. Learning is much more. Stories whether read or told by memory have been a great way for me to learn. Some of my Math students learn best when I can help them, through a story or by applying Math to real life situations; other students need hands-on or movement. It is up to us as professionals to know our students and their learning styles.
