Week 11: Social constructivism
Learning is gaining new knowledge bases on old knowledge. By learning we construct a system of knowledge and information, the system keep growing when we learn unceasingly.
Learning could be effectuated when teachers give students enough confidence and appropriate instructions. When I was in high school, I like watching my mother cooking because I thought it was fun. I wanted to learn cooking but the processes seemed too difficult for me. My mother gave me much confidence and told me that cooking is easy to learn as soon as you mater several principles. I tried to imitate my mother‘s way of cooking, the results were not too bad. My mother praised me and encouraged me to learn something more complex. It was a little bit hard for me as the procedures were so complicated. My mother asked me to help her when she cooked, and repeated tips while we were cooking. My cooking skill got better and better, all of my friends like eating what I cooked.
I should say that my mother plays an important role when I learned cooking, she was so patient that you were not afraid to make mistakes. And she would instruct me when I needed, she would praise me when I did good job, she would encourage me when I made mistakes. She was a good teacher, especial for me, because I’m always afraid of criticism.
In learning process, students make mistakes inevitably, it’s normal because they would reinforce what they learned through making and correcting mistakes. Making mistakes always brings frustrations, when our students make mistakes, we teachers should encourage them and instruct them appropriately, by which learning could be best effectuated.

Hi!
I really enjoyed your blog this week, Winnie. I think that an important part of learning is for sure building on previous knowledge. I always try to point out to my students what they already know that will help them with what I'm trying to teach them. I hope that it will help them feel confident in their lessons.
Thanks for sharing the cooking story as well. My mom also taught me to cook, and gave me a lot of confidence to experiment. I think I'm a pretty darned good cook these days. :) I had never thought of the experience in terms of education, but you are exactly right! That kind of nurturing environment is perfect for long-term learning.
Winnie, Great post. I think
Winnie,
Great post. I think a lot of people forget that parents are teachers to. It sounds like you had a very patient mom. As a father, I am glad I am learning these techniqes so that I can use them to better help my kids. Thanks for the story it was insperational.
Great post! You know I
Great post! You know I have thought about the application of the learning theories we have covered this semester from the perspective of a father as much as a teacher. If there are three students in this world I want to succeed it is my own children. In fact, I used and example of my own daughter in my Bruner post last week.
Anyway, you used the word confidence a couple of times in the example you gave of your mother teaching you to cook. I think that is what scaffolding is all about, creating a necessary confidence in students that will help them learn, especially when mistakes are made and they must try again.
I too learned to cook from
