Yale's piloted open courseware

The first session that I attended showed me how much more popular open education is than I had originally thought.  The speaker was presenting just from the standpoint of Yale, and here are some of the facts he gave about their piloted open courseware:
  • One-half million users
  • Users from 187 countries
  • Over half of the users are outside the US

This is good example of how large an audience can be and the difficulty that an instructional designer can have to reach their audience.  A lot of time and effort is required to make the content available to many different people and cultures.

After attending the session, designing open courseware is definitely something I could see myself doing upon graduation.  I believe at least some base level of education should be available to everyone and open courseware is an excellent way to help make it happen.  Many of the things utilized to create Yale’s open courseware are things that I am interested in: carefully planed video production, high quality video and audio production, and providing appropriate learning materials to accompany the production.  I was impressed with Yale’s effort to make their free, open courseware of high quality and reachable to many different types of users.
