Digital Alternatives to Traditional Textbooks

 

The issue of textbook adoption and purchase is a “hot” topic in our curriculum department in Davis School District. This issue has personal interest to me. I have been given the charge to investigate the current research and practices concerning e-texts, digital resources, and paperless curriculum across the US and make recommendations that will help shape the direction we will head in our district. I am curious to explore what the research says about this new trend in the delivery of instructional materials.The print textbook is expensive, outdated, and often time not used to its full capacity in our classrooms. This issue begs the question of; are digital alternatives a more effective way to deliver information and instruction in today's classroom?

Debates and Controversies: The Digital Textbook

To be electronic or not to be electronic, that is the question School Districts all over the nation are facing. The use of digital textbooks, open-source materials and software, and cutting-edge handheld electronic are the shaping the future of instruction in the American classroom. The questions surrounding this issue are how fast, to what extent, and at what costs?
 
 Naomi Dillon, in her article, “The e-Volving Textbook”, describes the years of debate and that surrounded the decision to declare that Pluto wasn’t a planet any longer. She says, “That bit of news forced school districts to take notice and rue the fact the all of the science books were now outdated” (Dillon, 2008 p.20) In classrooms all over the country, students are using outdated, fixed, and limited resource materials called textbooks.Click here to read more »

Definitions and philosophy for teaching, learning, & technology. Week 2

Based on the readings and videos this week, I chose to make comment on a few terms associated with Educational Technology.

Technology:  I would describe technology as the use and knowledge of tools that help one adapt to the environment. The tools can be material objects, systems, techniques, applications, or activities. I appreciated the discussion that it is more than a computer. Technology improves the quality of life, makes tasks more efficient, and provides advancement for mankind.
