Hill AFB Reflection

On Friday, October 10, 2008, I visited the Hill AFB base with my Foundations class.  I did not know what exactly to expect and the trip turned out to be pretty fun.  We meet with people the from Southwest Research Institute, Hill AFB CTO, and the 367th.  Each organization is unique in their own way.  Southwest does not only training and instruction but research as well.  Joyce Peters from the CTO was very energetic and dynamic.  Watching her made me tired.  The people at the 367th are very nice. They even fed us poor college students and gave us a wonderful tour of there facility from the begining of their value stream to the to end.

The highlight of the tour was getting to see what people in the field of instructional design really do.  The tour gave me a great opportunity to see the kinds of work that is being done, the software being used, and the different kinds of people in the field.  Instructional design is such a broad field that I feel as if I needed to know everything and have a general broad overview to get a job.  But seeing how the 367th people who are specialists in their own little corners, gives me hope.

Upon reflection, I wondered if the 367th or even the CTO at the Hill has to follow a set  of standard procedures when making instruction due to it's military enviroment.  Is there some set of protocols they need to follow?  How does instructional design in a military setting differ from that in the private sector?

Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
